What We Learned
We're Mike and Tansy Handfield.
We launched HandfieldsKidneyQuest.com
after Mike was diagnosed with Stage 5 or end-stage kidney disease and informed that he needed
a kidney transplant in order to survive.
Together, with family and friends, we became
educated about the kidney donation
process -- and ultimately,
secured the perfect kidney donor for Mike.
Now that Mike is thriving with his new kidney,
we're ready to share some important donor-related information we learned along the way.

What We Learned
One in about 800,000 Americans are living with
End Stage Kidney Disease.
Even though Mike was on the National Kidney Registry (NKR) for a transplant, we learned that roughly 45,000 patients are added to the Registry each year -- and wait times range from 3 to 10 years! Tragically, thousands die each year waiting for donated kidneys. So that's why we became educated and engaged in finding Mike his own kidney donor.
Donating is Safe -- and Detailed
Only about 20,000 DECEASED-donor
kidney transplants are conducted annually.
That means that the quickest way to receive a transplant is through the donation of a LIVING-donor kidney.
The good news is that we're born with two kidneys and can live healthy lives with just one.
And, donating a kidney is safe with quick recovery times.
